Women Taking the Lead in Mobilising Resources for the Most Vulnerable Families in Drought-Affected Province of Ghor
Ghor is one of Afghanistan’s provinces severely hit by the drought in the recent years. According to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSN), this crisis is particularly impacting poor households who are dependent on rainfed wheat production. The most vulnerable households are expected to experience difficulty meeting basic food consumption requirements until next year’s spring harvest.
The Community Development Council (CDC) formed through the Citizens’ Charter National Priority Program of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD/CCNPP) in Korak Uzbekia village in center of Sar-e-Pul province has shown great initiative by establishing a female tailoring course in the village in order to train local women in-house.
The quality school buildings can help create an appropriate environment for both learning and teaching. Based on studies, the well-designed school buildings and pleasant surroundings can lead to students’ better attendance, concentration, motivation and self-esteem which have a positive impact on their daily performances. Indeed, the physical and emotional health of students and teachers depend on the quality of location where they learn and teach.
Hassan Bigi, a small village consisted of 28 families is located alongside the Kokcha River in Shahr-e-Buzurg district some 50 km away from the district center and almost 30 km away from Faizabad the center of Badakhshan province. Most of the villagers in this community carry out farming activities and earn their living from agriculture. The cable-stayed cradle over the river which connects the community with the main road always posed a potential threat to the life of villagers, particularly to children and women.
