  1. BACKGROUND

A vast majority of the Afghan population lives in rural areas where poor governance, inadequate marketing infrastructure, ineffective business development services and unemployment limit the development potential of rural communities. In line with the development objectives, MRRD’s mission is to ensure the social, economic, and political welfare of rural society, especially poor and vulnerable people, through the provision of basic services, strengthening local governance, and promoting sustainable livelihoods. In order to respond to the needs of the rural communities, MRRD launched a program in 2010 titled “Afghanistan Rural Enterprises Development Program” (AREDP).

Afghanistan Rural Enterprise Development Program (AREDP) is a national multi-donor funded, government-led Program to jump-start private sector growth in rural Afghanistan. The Program strengthens the private sector through integrated, value chain, knowledge based interventions from top to bottom, community enterprise development from bottom to top, and by addressing credit and capital needs. The over-arching developmental goal of the Program is to improve employment and income of rural men and women, and the sustainability of targeted local enterprises.
