CARD-F Agricultural Value Chains

Poultry Value Chain:

CARD-F supports the poultry value chain by establishing new breeder farms, commercial layer farms, hatcheries, small scale layer farms, feed mill, up-grading and standardizing existing poultry farms, and provision of veterinarian services via poultry clinics. In addition, CARD-F provides marketing and training support to poultry farmers and entrepreneurs. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Established 1 feed mill in Nangarhar province which will produce 31 MT feed annually.
  • Constructed 7 breeder farms in Nangarhar province. The farms have together produced 1.5 million fertile eggs. These facilities supply fertile eggs to the hatcheries and plays vital role in strengthening of the poultry value chain.
  • Constructed and standardized 119 commercial broiler farms in Nangarhar and Helmand provinces. These farms have together produced more than 2.7 million broilers. 
  • Constructed 4 hatcheries in Nangarhar province and the construction of another 2 in Herat and Kandahar provinces are in progress. These farms have together produced 1.6 million day old chicks.
  • Constructed 9 commercial layer farms in Nangarhar and Herat provinces. These farms will together produce more than 25 million eggs annually.
  • Established 1,813 small scale layer farms in Parwan, Nangarhar, Herat, Balkh, Kandahar and Badakhshan provinces. These farms have together produced 7 million table eggs.
  • Established 1 Live Bird Market in Kabul province and 1 poultry clinic in Nangarhar province.

Vegetable Value Chain:

CARD-F supports the vegetable value chain by establishing greenhouses, facilitating the provision of access to improved seeds, market facilitation and formation of vegetable associations, and providing training in contemporary agriculture practices. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Established 570 greenhouses in Nangarhar, Badakhshan, Parwan, Kandahar and Helmand provinces. These greenhouses have together produced more than 5.8 million KGs of fresh vegetables.

Grapes Value Chain:

CARD-F supports the grapes value chain by establishing raisin processing factory, raison drying facilities, trellising gapes vines, and training farmers in vineyard management and harvesting. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Trellised 300 Jeribs of grapes vineyards in Parwan province. Trellising of other 200 Jeribs is in progress. The upgrading of vineyards with new trellising system will greatly increase the quantity and quality of grapes yields during 4 years.
  • Established 6 Kishmish Khanas (Raisins Drying Facilities) in Parwan province and the construction of another 24 is in progress. These Kishmish Khanas will together produce 375 MTs of raisins from 1,500 MTs of Grapes.

CARD-F Dairy Value Chain:

CARD-F supports the dairy value chain by establishing milk collection centers, dairy producer associations, and veterinary clinics, providing hygienic milking kits, conducting trainings to farmers on effective cattle management, fodder management, milking, milk collection and supply practices. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Established 5 Milk Collection Centers (able to collect 12,000 liters of milk daily) in Balkh and construction work of another 2 in Herat province is in progress. The MCCs have together collected 2.5 million liters of milk.
  • Distributed 1,300 Milking Hygiene Kits for women in Balkh province.

Apiculture Value Chain:

CARD-F supports the apiculture value chain by providing bee hives, extraction and safety kits, technical and market development trainings, and facilitating markets for products. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Established 725 honey bee farms in Badakhshan and Helmand provinces. These farms have together produced 77,898 KGs of honey.

Cotton Value Chain:

CARD-F assists the cotton value chain by establishing oil refinery and extraction factories, providing improved cotton seeds, establishing demonstration plots, facilitating the formation of forward linkages with private ginners and processors as well as market facilitation. Following are our accomplishments under this value chain:

  • Established 2 cotton processing plants and trained more than 1,250 farmers on cultivation, collection and processing of cotton.

Infrastructure:

It is worth mentioning that infrastructure is a critical component for the support of all CARD-F targeted value chains. Following are our accomplishments under the infrastructure supports:

  • Completed the construction work of 6.14 KM road in Balkh district of Balkh province. The road connects farmers with milk collection centers.
  • Work continues on Tangi Tokhchi canal in Nangarhar province and on 7 irrigation canals in Badakhshan province. Upon culmination of work, these canals will cumulatively irrigate more than 10,000 hectares of land in eastern and northern Afghanistan.
